M.A.Students are required to take a minimum of 24 credits in course work. These courses must include the following:

(1) Research and Discussion,
(2) a two-semester reading course on non-Chinese historiography in a foreign language,
(3) a course related to the student’s research interest in another department, and
(4) M.A. thesis and research (0 credit).

Aside from course work, M.A. students are also required to pass a preliminary written examination and an oral defense of their M.A. theses.

Ph.D.students must take a minimum of 24 credits in course work, including the following required courses:

(1) Research and Discussion,
(2) a course related to the student’s research interests taught by the graduate advisor;
(3) Ph.D. thesis research (0 credit).

Aside from course works, Ph.D. students are required to pass a language test, a preliminary written examination and an oral defense of their Ph.D. theses.
