The C&INC has the obligations to inform the users of the regulations that the users must follow for the “use of network”, and therefore the signature of the user must appear on the form as a proof of agreement to the regulations. Moreover, as Photostat copies are not legally effective the users are therefore required to attach the original copies of the application forms in order to protect the users’ right and to avoid unnecessary disputes which may arise in the future.
Q2: Why do I have to use my “initials” as my account name?
A2: An account name represents the individual and the initials of your Chinese name, or your English name followed by your surname, must be used as your account name. No English alphabets or Arabic numbers without meanings should be used as account names.
Q3: How long does it take for password change to effect?

  • Introduction to Student Web Page Setting

  • How to use Web Counter?
    • 2019-08-07

    Type A
    Type B
    Type C
    Type D
    Type E
    Type F
    1. This Web Counter uses the Muhamad A Muquit WWW Homepage Access Counter and Clock . The current version is V.2.5. For details please refer to Examples.
    2. All open URL with NTU IP 140.112.xxx.xxx can be used.
    3. Fill in a tag like the following on the location of your web page where web counter is required:
      <img src="http://www.ntu.edu.tw/cgi-bin/Count.cgi?df=chicco.www&dd=F" align="absmiddle">
    4. “df=” is the data file that records the number of visits to your HomePage. If my HomePage is on the CCSUN with the account “b0705041”, then my data file will be “df=b0705041.cc”. If it is on the ccsun31-57, then the data file will be “df=b0705041.ms.cc”. If my HomePage is on the WWW with the account “chicco”, then my data file will be “df=chicco.www”.
    5. If I need many web counters on many pages, I can add more data files following the aforesaid rules. If I am “b0705041” on the CCSUN and 2 more pages of “document” and “reference” need web counters, the data file for “document” can be named “b0705041.doc.cc” and the data file for “reference” can be named “b0705041.ref.cc”. Basically the “b0705041” and “cc” before and after the file names are still the same, but the “doc” and “ref” in the middle can be anything you want.
    6. “dd=” is the type of template you would like to use. Currently there are 6 types and more will be available later. “dd=F” means that I would like to use type “F”.
    7. If you have used other web counters and do not want to recount from the beginning, you can add a “st” parameter. For example, “st=1024” means the counter will start counting from 1024. (Reference Example)

    2. Personalized Desktop: You can configure your own working environment, including the arrangement of Windows Desktop, personal document folders, Internet browser bookmarks, emails, and other software settings. No matter which computer you use, once the account and password verification is passed the system automatically loads your personal setting you are used to and provides convenient services.
    3. Internet Hard Drive: Every user is given independent Internet Drive Storage to store personal materials so that users do not need to carry discs with them and transfer or move the files. Furthermore, the Internet Drive Storage also provides daily backup services to ensure the safety and completeness of the data.
    4. Remote Access: The system environment setting of every user and important files, such as personal folders, can be accessed remotely through the Internet. Users can get access to their personal information from the lab, at home, or any other place at any time.

  • What is Mail Server
    • 2019-08-07

A Mail Server is responsible for receiving and sending your mails. All emails you send and receive have to go through the server. The NTU has 2 email servers so when you need to use either Netscape or Outlook to send and receive emails, the mail server settings are as follows :
For faculty members: ccms.ntu.edu.tw, Email Address is: xxxxx@ccms.ntu.edu.tw
For students: ms.cc.ntu.edu.tw, Email Address is: xxxxx@ms.cc.ntu.edu.tw
    xxxxx is your account name.

  • What is FTP
    • 2019-08-07

FTP is the abbreviation for file transfer protocol. As implied by name, it is a protocol designed for transferring files. FTP is not confined to some specific operating systems (such as WINDOWS), as long as the standard RFC959 and TCP/IP protocol are followed, files can be transferred across different operating systems, such as WINDOWS and RedHat Linux. As a result of the popularization of applications on websites, more and more people transfer files directly via HTTP, though, there are still many resources of information engineering, computer networking, and even academy are transferred via FTP. It is precisely because it is simple and fast (little overhead during transmission processes). However, we should note that user information as well as files in simple FTP are transferred in plain code, which may insinuate doubts of security. This can be dealt with through SSH-FTP.
Common FTP server software: ftpd, vsftpd, FileZilla FTP Server, Gene FTPd, etc.
Common FTP client software: ftp, FileZilla FTP Client, SmartFTP, etc.

  • What is a Gateway
    • 2019-08-07

As there are many machines in the University, they are divided into different domains. For example: The IP address of the C&INC workstations is 140.112.8.xxx, and therefore the workstations are on the NTU .8 domain. Every domain has a gateway that connects with other domains and each gateway needs to use an IP address. The gateways are regularly set at 254 of each domain, therefore, the IP address of the gateway on the .8 domain is 140.112.8.254.
The gateways for other domains would therefore be 140.112.xx.254, where xx is your domain.

  • What is DNS
    • 2019-08-07

IP addresses are usually difficult to remember; therefore, it is easier to give your machine a name, and then register it on the DNS so that others can find you via the DNS. Of course the users must register with network administrators for them to configure your DNS in the network environment.
NTU (Primary) DNS: 140.112.254.4 (Secondary) DNS: 140.112.2.2

  • What is a Proxy Server?
    • 2019-08-07

A Proxy Servers is not a basic setting for the Internet environment; it is designed to speed up the information retrieval of the browsers (IE or Netscape). If someone else has already viewed the information that you are going to view now, your machine does not need to retrieve the information from the computer of which the information is stored, but retrieve it directly from the Proxy Server. The setting method of NTU Proxy Server is:

    1. IE 5.x: Go to [Tools] → [Internet] → [Connect] → [LAN Setting] → [Use Auto-Proxy Script] → and fill in http://proxy.ntu.edu.tw/pac/ntu.pac at “Website”
    2. Netscape Navigator 4.x: Go to [Edit] => [Function Setting] => [Advanced] => [Proxy Server], and fill in http://proxy.ntu.edu.tw/pac/ntu.pac
    3. For settings for other systems please refer to General User Setting in NTU Network Caching Service. If other Proxy Servers are open you can also set on those proxy servers.
