The special exhibition of NTU Museum of Zoology, 2021-The Three Flying Squirrel Brothersand Their Gut Microbiota Friends
Do you know how cute flying squirrels survive in the wild?
Do you know that flying squirrels are vegetarian and their secret of being a vegetarian is strongly related to his gut microbiota friend?
In this special exhibition, NTU museum of Zoology transformed Professor Hon-Tsen Yu and Dr. Po-Yu Liu’s academic research, published in the international journal Scientific Reports, into an exhibition of popular science knowledge. Through this exhibition, we aim to embody the spirit of a university museum and lead everyone to explore the story of flying squirrels and their gut microbiota.
The Ecology and Feeding habits of Flying Squirrels
Tips for the ecological behavior of flying squirrels are displayed in the exhibition area. By means of puzzles, we demonstrate the features of white-faced flying squirrels (Petaurista alborufus lena), complex toothed flying squirrels (Trogopterus xanthipes), and Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans ori). Through this interactive display, we learn their knowledge impressively. Meanwhile, we take advantages of the related food specimens gathered in Taiwan to help imagine, more concretely, how flying squirrels manage to survive in the wild!
In the exhibition, we present to you knowledge of flying squirrels’ ecological behavior. By means of puzzles, we demonstrate understand the features of white-faced flying squirrels (Petaurista alborufus lena), complex toothed flying squirrels (Trogopterus xanthipes), and Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans ori). Moreover, we bring related food specimens, gathered in Taiwan, to help you concretely image how flying squirrels manage to survive in the wild. With these interactive displays, we hope you can learn their knowledge impressively!
The Symbiosis Between Flying Squirrels and Gut Microbiota
Being a vegetarian(herbivore), how does flying squirrels make use of gut microbiota to survive in the wild?
And for what kinds of bacteria are in symbiosis with flying squirrels? As experts in flying squirrels and gut microbiota, Professor Hon-Tsen Yu and Dr. Po-Yu Liu will lead every one to understand how related researchs are conducted! A lot of related knowledge about microorganism and interactive installation are also displayed in the exhibition area to offer every one a further understanding of the basic knowledge and future application of gut microbiota.
