Abstract
This paper argues that parks are important arenas manifesting urban transformation and dynamics of everyday life. The study explores three neighbourhood parks in and around a readjustment area of Sanchong District, where rural migrants for Taipei metropolis agglomerate. We examine how the production and use of the parks embody and reshape the urban difference. Through on-field observation and interviews, it is found that (1) through residents’ labouring on maintenance and surveillance, the park within the old street blocks features an inward-oriented, living-room-like space; (2) the ‘modern’ park among the new middle-class communities features tensions between spatial openness vis-à-vis managerialism; (3) the park bordering on the readjustment area features a mix of traditionality and modern life, and manifests a boundary landscape in transition. The textures and rhythms encircling the parks hence mediates the negotiation and production of multiple differences, as well as the shaping of different urban subjects. In this light, a more inclusive planning of park space should consider not only functionality but also ambiguity where differences might remain.
